  • UNITING THE ACCOUNTING PROFESSION

On January 17, 2012, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA  Canada) and the Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada) presented members with a framework to unify the Canadian accounting profession.

The Unification Framework is the result of several months of discussions among our organizations and consultation with members, Canadian business leaders, governments, regulators and other stakeholders.  It includes details of a transition to a new common designation, Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), and the development of a new CPA Certification Program. The structure of the framework is consistent with the unification process already underway in the Province of Quebec, where the Orders of Chartered Accountants, Certified Management Accountants and Certified General Accountants have agreed to unify under the Chartered Professional Accountant designation.

By joining together, our organizations and members will be in a strong position to provide the highest quality financial and management accounting services, while serving and protecting the public interest by establishing consistent codes of professional conduct, disciplinary systems and licensing regimes.

Unification of the profession would result in Canada having one of the largest accounting organizations in the world with the influence needed to advance Canadian business interests.

Provincially, discussions continue with CMA-NL and CGA-NL.  Over the next several months, further information will be made available to members.

    Timeline:

January – February 2012 – Merger discussions between ICANL, CMA-NL and CGA-NL will continue with the intention of preparing a final provincial merger proposal to present to the respective memberships.  Town Hall discussions will be scheduled with members to discuss the Unification Framework and Certification Model.

  • CGA-Canada Enters Exploratory Merger Discussions

    From CGA-Canada

    Member Communication

CGA-Canada has announced that it has agreed to enter exploratory discussions with the CICA and CMA Canada about the possibility of the three national accountancy bodies merging operations. The CICA and CMA Canada are welcoming CGA-Canada to these discussions.

Over the last five months as the CAs and CMAs moved forward with the unification initiative, the door was left open for the CGAs to enter the discussion. CGA-Canada has now agreed to work with CICA and CMA Canada to explore how the operations of the three national bodies can be merged to best support members and the provincial organizations throughout the unification process and beyond.

Like other affiliates, CGA-Canada in joining this discussion, has agreed with the eight overarching principles that have been guiding the CA and CMA organizations’ unification exploration from its inception. This agreement is important as it provides the potential for a timely unification of members of all three accounting organizations under the designation Chartered Professional Accountant.

Currently, the CA and CMA national boards and provincial councils are reviewing feedback from members and other stakeholders who influence the future of the profession. Should a decision be made to present a formal unification proposal to members, the provincial organizations will be actively engaging members and soliciting feedback and the national organizations will help to coordinate that process while developing plans to integrate our operations.

We will continue to keep you informed as things progress, and as always we welcome your thoughts on this important initiative. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at
